You have to walk down a ramp to get to the sand. The ramp stretches over sand dunes, with sea oats dotting them, blowing in the near-constant breeze. On the same level as the ramp: a boardwalk, dotted with places to get sketchy-looking fried food, to try your luck at a number of games of chance, to watch performers, to ride roller coasters of the future!!!!

When you walk down the ramp, it's all white sand and blue water. Down about half a mile is a pier that juts out several hundred feet.

It's a nice beach. Not too crowded.

It's Mal's turn to look quizzical. "Do what, precisely?"

"Planned forays for--" She uses a delicate, specific pause, choosing not to use the word spy "--watching people during awkward moments they are forced into."

There was a smirk as her words ended. "You make it sound quite easily accomplished."

Mal shrugs. "The concept is definitely easier than having folk do likewise to me. It helps to be proactive."

People would do that to him? Never.

"I'll tell you if ends up back in Milliways again then." Marian nodded, hugging her legs. "Are you and yours well? The repairs and time off?"

[badinlatin]

"We're as good as always." Intentionally vague.

[queenofmay]

Marian didn't raise an eye brow, but her eyes shifted back to him in a calm bemusement at his choice of reaction.

"Good."

[badinlatin]

"Its pretty," Mal changes topic without so much thought for a segue. "The ocean. Only been twice or so -- one of the hazards of living where I have."

[queenofmay]

"It's my first," Marian said, smiling sliding back onto her lips as she looked at it. "Real one at least."

Settling her chin on her knees, she said after a moment, not looking from the waves. "They were both right about it in the end. It is different from a lake that is sometimes a Caribbean ocean."

"Who they?"

Her smile was smaller and fainter when she spoke. The absence was still there inside of her, but not the ache it had been.

"Caspian and Edmund."

Mal's experiences with Edmund are very...different, he imagines, than the ones Edmund and Marian shared.

He does not expound on them, so much as: "Edmund ever tell you the time his brother got kidnapped in my 'verse?"

The corner of Marian's mouth puckered, her expression a dazzle of amused surprise. "Peter got kidnapped?"

"That he did.

"Rescued by me and Miss Lilly Kane. Quite an experience."

[queenofmay]

Connecting the quiet noble man with the need for rescue by Lilly and Mal made for continued amusement. "Who would kidnap him?"

[badinlatin]

Mal shrugs. "We were not precisely in the most friendly and or hygienic place in my where and when. We went to a bar and three of the more disreputable men there decided he might be worth some coin."

Marian grinned.

"He would stick out."

[badinlatin]

"Clearly a moneyed individual," Mal agrees.

"Which, and no offense miss, would be why most folk don't get field trips here from Milliways. Requires my crew to be more careful 'n normal."

[queenofmay]

Marian tilted her head, some curiosity.

"Could you not costume them more appropriately?"




Though Peter would stand out with just his posture and speech patterns.

A lift of an eyebrow.

"Would you want to dress up like me?"

[queenofmay]

"It is not the worst thing I have considered wearing," Marian said, her tone both teasing and honest. "Especially as it would for the grace of a new world-- or space."

Instead of thievery and its related fun.

"Now you have to tell me what the worst thing is that you've worn.

"I'm imagining girdles."
