It's not always advisable to have music playing while the patient is conscious, and this patient will have to be conscious during the entire procedure. But during the prep -- well, there's nothing wrong with that.

Kelly Halonen's choice: an old song. The original recording, even. She likes it. Likes it a lot. Her colleagues just roll their eyes, and grin a little, and keep working. There's more setup to do than usual; normally they don't even try to do brain scans on board this vessel -- it's a light transport, not a cruiser -- but when the higher-ups command, they go back to older methods.
An hour later, everybody is scrubbed in. Masks on. In position. Waiting. They have a job to do, and it's just a job, and they're going to do it as quickly and painlessly as possible. They're not cruel; they're not kind. They're professional.
The music is off, even if the song might still be running through the heads of a few of them.
They've heard that River Tam isn't a girl who misses much.
