Don't know if you saw the peice in The Guardian, but King is considering a sequel to the Shining. Danny Torrance at 40 working as an orderly in a hospice in NYC. Based on what we know about the Overlook fire & pub dates, that means he will be there by 2012--he might be there already. Title to be Doctor Sleep. I know you've always been concerned about where he ended up--looks like he beat the low men after all.
Hope you are well. Things are a madhouse here between Dome-Day and all the sequel announcements. A Dark Tower midquel!!! This is going to change everything. Unless it doesn't, I guess.
Oh, and, Happy Thanksgiving.
Michael

I hadn't seen it, no. Thanks -- I hope he's okay.
Listen, I know you're busy as hell, but can I ask you something? Precedent-related?

Can you tell me if there's any other Stephen King character with paranormal abilities who at some point had them permanently changed? Enhanced?

Outside of contact with Ted Brautigan? Not off the top of my head. Not people who had a paranormal baseline that then escalated because of outside factor. People who had powers initiated in them, yes, like in Tommyknockers or, well, your parents. And people who are still discovering the depths of their powers as things go on, like Carrie White. But not like you're suggesting.

I was afraid of that.
Yeah. The fatigue's not going away. I mean, the doctors are doing the best they can, but what's happened to me is pretty much entirely outside anybody's experience, and ... I figured it couldn't hurt to call for a second opinion from an expert in a related field.

I'm sorry. I really can't think of anything along those lines, but I'll put it out to the pool.
Is it bad?

Thanks, Michael.
It isn't worse. It's even a little better, sometimes. But it's still a pain.

I can think of a few cases like that. Not to do with paranormal powers--usually to do with physical health. People who accomplish something major, but have serious aftereffects.
I guess I don't have to tell you that in those cases it's usually something permanent.
I'm sorry.

It's okay.
No, really, that sounds weak, but I mean it. Even if this is permanent. It's okay. It was worth it.
Happy Thanksgiving, Michael.
